Located in between the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys and in between the Wasilla and Lucile Lakes, it offers convenient access to the great outdoors for fishing, ice fishing, boaters, campers, and hikers. In addition to the city’s six amenity-rich parks, residents can play at one of several nearby state parks, including Big Lake North State Recreation Area, Big Lake South State Recreation Site, Nancy Lake State Recreation Area, and the Rocky Lake State Recreation Site. Favorite local activities include taking in a concert at the outdoor amphitheater in Iditapark; skating at the skateboard park; playing volleyball, basketball, and tennis; biking on the city’s 10 miles of trail; racing on the local BMX track; camping at Lake Lucile Park; swimming at Newcomb Park; climbing, playing, and swinging on the equipment at Nunley Park; and watching the salmon travel along one of many area creeks. Residents also can grow their own food on one of the individual plots in the city’s community garden or take in an Alaska Avalanche game at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center. The city of Wasilla also sponsors several popular community events: the 4th of July Celebration, the summer Music in the Park series, and the Alaska Arbor Day Celebration.
